TBExG organises a BE Practitioners' programme for Tata BlueScope Steel

Published on January 03, 2017

Tata BlueScope Steel (TBSL) is a joint venture between Tata Steel and BlueScope Steel, and operates in the field of coated steel, steel building solutions and related building products. The company wished to train the new crop of managers in the key tenets of excellence using the principles of the TBEM framework while focussing on their own business. Another objective of the company was also to create a higher levels of appreciation about the challenges and opportunities of customer and supplier functions within the business value chain.

To kickstart this process, Tata Business Excellence Group (TBExG) organised two BE Practitioners' Programmes for the key managers of Tata BlueScope Steel across its locations in Pune and Jamshedpur in December 2016. Around 60 managers from an eclectic mix of functions were taken through these sessions across the two locations.

The programme was customised to the requirements of the company and was designed in a workshop mode by TBExG. The TBExG team finalised the programme content and prework design after a series of discussions with the company on the objectives and purpose of the programme. During the programmes, the core concepts of excellence were delivered with short exercises around the company's business value chain and the company's differentiators vis-a-vis the competition. The participants were also made aware of the interdependencies in the value chain on key suppliers / partners and the key front end intermediaries of dealers and distributors.

Participants in the BE Practitioners programmes could partake in discussions on customer segments and their specific requirements, and how Tata BlueScope Steel is positioned to deliver these. The exercise made the participants think about the measurement systems to assess delivery on customer-specific requirements. During the programmes, participants also undertook exercises to familiarise themselves with the challenges facing the company, and the core competencies that enable the company to differentiate itself in the marketplace and earn a brand premium. As an outcomes of the BE Practitioners programmes, a first cut of the organisation profile for Tata BlueScope Steel is ready for its application to the TBEM process.

As a part of the programme, Riten Choudhury, MD, Tata BlueScope Steel, interacted with the participants and shared his view on the company's plans, and the important role played by TBEM in making excellence central to everything the company does. Dr Ashish Bhaduri, Head of the coated steel plant, attended the programme at Jamshedpur, and shared his experiences and learnings with the participants, reiterating the importance of the customer to the business.
