143 employees from 30 companies participate in the Certified Internal Examiner in Tata Safety & Health Management System Programme

Published on February 21, 2023

In 1868, J N Tata laid the vision for the Tata group towards creating a safe and healthy working environment, by reducing injury and illness in the workplace. Over the years, the concern for employees’ welfare has driven several policies and structural interventions here at the Tata group. The Tata Safety & Health Management System is one such example which provides a framework on how to improve the group’s safety standards, performance and culture. As a guideline, it ensures a consistent approach to safety and health across the organisations, irrespective of the geography. It operationalises the beliefs of the Tata group into specific actionable elements and enables companies to fulfil the aspiration of becoming a benchmark in the respective business sectors.

It is driven by this goal, that the ‘Certified Internal Examiner in Tata Safety & Health Management System Programme’ was conducted in February and March 2023. The programme was conducted in four batches.

Two batches which were open to participants across Tata companies (February 2-3 and 22-23) at TMTC Pune, saw the participation of 73 employees, across 28 companies. Two companies conducted customised in-house programmes — Tata Power (March 14-15, 2023) and Tata AutoComp Systems Ltd. (February 28 and March 1, 2023).

Following were the objectives laid down for the programme:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the Tata Safety and Health Management System and expectations
  • Appreciate the various practical examples and case studies of how the management system is applied in work scenarios
  • Understand the various tools and techniques for self-assessing the management system

The programme not only equipped the participants with the requisite knowledge but also built the necessary skills which the participants could use to conduct an internal audit of the Tata Safety & Health Management System within their company/site.

The certification programme was designed with pre-work, classroom and post-work assignments.  Classroom discussions included topics such as learning from case studies, discussions on investigations from serious incidents, best practices, etc.
