1200 Tata safety professionals from across 41 Tata companies, which was around 80% of safety professionals in the Tata group across India, undertook the first ever safety proficiency exam on March 8, 2025. This exam was planned in such a way that it took place in the National Safety Week, which was celebrated from March 4-10, 2025. The 2.5 hours exam was a multiple choice one, with the focus being on 10 Safety & Health related topics.

This exam was conducted via TCS ioN’s platform, and candidates participated using their laptops / desktops from their respective locations. This was a remote-proctored exam wherein the candidates were monitored by invigilators through the webcam. The key features included:

- AI Support: Videos/images were analysed using Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- The Remote Assessments (RA) Online Proctoring: To ensure that the candidate took the assessment from their own location of convenience and on their own Windows system (Desktop or Laptop with Webcam)

In order to be prepared for the exam, the Tata Group Safety & Health team scheduled an IT infrastructure readiness check as well as a mock exam on March 5, 2025 for all safety professionals undertaking this exam.
During the Tata Safety Heads Meet in March 2024, the participants collectively agreed to explore an intervention to:
- Enhance the knowledge of safety professionals
- Increase familiarity with Tata group guidelines, system & standards
- Accelerate professional competence by keeping them abreast with the changing Indian regulations, use of technology, standards & best practices
- Prepare themselves for international certifications
Following this, Tata Group Safety & Health team, along with a cross-company team of safety experts, brainstormed and finalised a safety proficiency exam for Tata safety professionals. They considered various aspects of this exam and finalised the broad topics, body of knowledge, testing platform, question bank, amongst others.

The Tata Group Safety & Health team then invited all full-time safety department team members, irrespective of whether they had a formal safety qualification, degree or international certifications. An introductory call was conducted in the week of the exam to discuss the purpose, topics, scoring pattern of the exam – this ensured that all the participants could understand the details before taking the exam.
The success of this safety proficiency exam lays the foundation for the Tata Group Safety & Health team to continue to lead the efforts to build Safety & Health culture and enhancing safety performance within Tata companies. The team, with the help of safety professionals across the Tata Group, plans to build on this effort to line up more advanced exams and certifications for safety professionals across the Tata group.
