Tata Manufacturing Quality Forum: Insights from Cummins’ World-Class Operations

The Tata Manufacturing Quality Forum organised an experiential learning visit to Cummins India Limited on November 19–20, 2025. Held across multiple Cummins facilities in Pune, the two-day programme brought together Tata group employees for an immersive exchange on operational excellence in manufacturing, quality systems, and sustainability practices. The visit blended presentations, plant tours, and hands-on observations, giving participants a comprehensive view of Cummins’ excellence practices.

Day 1: Quality Systems, Digital Operations and ESG Practices

The programme commenced at the Cummins facility with a welcome by leadership, who outlined the agenda and objectives of the visit.

Insights into Cummins' Operations: Kavita Kaushik, Head – Quality and Six Sigma, India Region, Cummins India Limited, provided an in-depth overview of the company and its commitment to innovation and operational excellence. This was followed by sessions on quality systems, including Zero Defect Manufacturing (ZDM).

Six Sigma and Sustainability: A session was conducted on Six Sigma and capability building along with an engaging session on ESG practices, emphasising Cummins' dedication to sustainability and continuous improvement.

Manufacturing Systems and IIoT: Participants were introduced to Cummins' advanced manufacturing systems and Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT) applications, demonstrating how technology is leveraged to enhance efficiency and productivity.

KEP Exemplar Site Visit: The day concluded with a visit to the KEP (Kothrud Engine Plant) facility. Participants observed safety practices, plant operations, and assembly lines, reinforcing the day’s learnings through direct exposure to world-class practices. 

Day 2 Highlights: Integrated Operations across Phaltan and Beyond

TCPL2 Phaltan Megasite: The second day began with an overview of the TCPL2 Megasite, followed by a comprehensive round of the plant. Participants gained insights into safety protocols and operational strategies.

PHP and PCP2 Facilities: The group then travelled to the PHP and PCP2 facilities, where they explored plant operations and learned about innovative practices implemented at these sites.

Training Centre and Wrap-Up: The programme concluded at the Cummins Training Centre. Participants shared key takeaways and identified opportunities to deploy similar practices within their own organisations.

The Cummins visit provided Tata group participants with a holistic understanding of how world-class organisations integrate quality, digital adoption, sustainability, and people practices into manufacturing excellence. The learnings are expected to support ongoing improvement initiatives across Tata companies and reinforce the Group’s commitment to building future-ready manufacturing capabilities.
