Tata Chemicals Elevates Quality Standards with Learnings from Tata Power DDL

Published on January 02, 2026

Tata Chemicals participated in the Tata Manufacturing Quality Forum held on July 7–8, 2025, at Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL). Organised by the Tata Business Excellence Group (TBExG) under the Tata Best Practices & Benchmarking Programme, the forum brought together Manufacturing and Quality leaders across the Tata group to share insights, address common challenges, and drive continuous improvement.

During the two-day event, Tata Chemicals gained valuable insights from TPDDL’s quality journey—from winning the JRD Quality Value (JRDQV) Award in 2017 to its pursuit of the Deming Prize through the structured adoption of Total Quality Management (TQM) principles.

Following the forum, Tata Chemicals initiated a focused programme to enhance Quality and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) adherence at its Nutritional Quotient (NQ) business manufacturing facility. The objective was to reinforce a culture of compliance and ensure all processes meet stringent regulatory and safety standards for food ingredient manufacturing.

Non-adherence to GMP can result in internal batch rejections due to physical, chemical, or microbial risks—impacting product safety, increasing operational costs, and risking regulatory non-compliance. To address these risks, Tata Chemicals implemented a structured improvement approach that included:

  • Policy Management – Clear guidelines and SOPs for GMP compliance
  • Daily Work Management – Defined routines to monitor adherence
  • Cross-Functional Participation – Collaboration across departments for holistic implementation

The adoption of TQM delivery vehicles helped deepen engagement across the organisation in the form of:

  • L-1 Team Involvement – Frontline teams actively participating in problem-solving
  • OFI (Opportunities for Improvement) – Quality rounds and leadership walkthroughs to identify gaps
  • Training & RCA (Root Cause Analysis) – Continuous learning and corrective actions to boost GMP scores

Following the implementation of these learnings in August 2025, Tata Chemicals recorded an improvement of 4–5 points in GMP scores, reinforcing its commitment to quality, compliance, and operational excellence.

It has been an enriching experience to enhance my understanding of TQM delivery vehicles and the challenges faced during implementation. Observing how continuous adherence has enabled the team to align under the Quality Circle framework was insightful. Regular deployment of Quality Circles remains a key focus to sustain improvement and drive excellence.
