To mark World Data Privacy Day, EDGE hosted its 515th webinar, Shaping India’s Privacy Landscape with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDPA), bringing together senior leaders, policymakers, and practitioners from across the Tata ecosystem to examine the Act’s implications for businesses in India.
The session saw strong participation, with 677 attendees from 66 Tata companies, reflecting the increasing strategic importance of data privacy across businesses and functions.
The webinar was moderated by Rahul Puri, SVP, Tata Play Limited, and featured an eminent panel of speakers: Srinath Chakravarthy, SVP, National Institute for Smart Government; Sapthagiri Chapalapalli, Head – Europe, TCS; and Deepak Goel, Scientist-G and Group Coordinator, Cyber Laws & Data Governance Division, Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY). Together, the speakers brought complementary perspectives spanning public policy, regulatory oversight, and enterprise-scale implementation experience in India and global markets.
Discussions focused on moving from the spirit of the DPDPA to effective execution. Panelists examined key principles of the Act, the evolving responsibilities of data fiduciaries, and the practical challenges organisations face as they operationalise consent management, data governance, breach preparedness, and accountability frameworks. Drawing on lessons from GDPR adoption in Europe, the session offered insights into building scalable, sustainable compliance models aligned with business realities.
A recurring theme throughout the discussion was the need to embed privacy-by-design across systems, processes, and organisational culture. Speakers emphasised that successful DPDPA implementation requires leadership commitment, cross-functional collaboration, workforce awareness, and close coordination with data processors and ecosystem stakeholders.
Importantly, the webinar reinforced the idea that data privacy is not merely a regulatory obligation but a strategic business enabler. Trust-centric data practices were positioned as a source of competitive advantage—strengthening customer confidence, enhancing brand reputation, and supporting responsible innovation in an increasingly digital economy.
The session received an exceptional ~95% top-two feedback score, reflecting high levels of engagement and relevance. The webinar also reaffirmed EDGE’s role as a platform for knowledge sharing and best-practice exchange, supporting Tata companies as they progress on their DPDPA readiness and implementation journeys.

It clearly explained the intent of the Act, key concepts such as consent management, data fiduciary and data principal responsibilities, and the compliance obligations for organisations. The discussion on practical implications, including data lifecycle management, breach reporting, and penalties, helped translate regulatory requirements into actionable understanding
