TNF India - East organises its second Regional BE Heads meet for FY 17-18

TNF India - East held a Regional BE Heads meet on February 28, 2018, at Hotel Ramada, Jamshedpur. This was the second such meet organised for the BE Heads of the eastern region for FY 17-18. The event was attended by 15 participants from 10 Tata companies. Different initiatives undertaken by TBExG and the respective companies were shared and discussed.

After a brief presentation by Abhijit Mitra, Advisor, TBExG; NK Sharan, Vice-President, TBExG, shared his thoughts and highlighted issues related to BE Plan, LBE Survey, etc. and their importance. He also spoke about the desired role of a BEH.

Monika Agarwal, BE Head, Tata Steel Processing and Distribution (TSPDL), gave a presentation of their BE Plan draft based on OFI’s received from the last feedback. In her presentation, she highlighted, among other things, how TSPDL is focusing on coaching for the senior management and leadership team, review system, etc.

This was followed by Uttam Soni, BE Head, Tata Capital, sharing with the group the details of the following Best Practices in Tata Capital.

1.Customer analytics
2.Enterprise risk management
3.Management of excellence
4.Customer life-cycle
5.Key account management

He also threw light on culture building at Tata Capital along with the 10 important traits identified at Tata Capital. He also elaborated on the 10 strategic objectives of the organisation to build competitive advantage and enhance organisational productivity. He also emphasised on the improvement in results by virtue of implementing the good practices.

Post lunch, Anil Nandakumar, Senior Consultant, TBExG, delved into Deep Dives. Apart from sharing the concept and process, he elucidated on the Deep Dives conducted in Tata Communication on ‘Voice of Customer’ and Tata Capital on ‘Key Account Management’ and the feedback received. He also informed the house regarding the Maturity Models that have been developed by TBExG in the following areas:

1.Project management
2.Voice of Customer process
3.Strategy deployment
4.After-sales services
5.Competitive intelligence.

Mr Nandakumar’s session was followed by a discussion on ‘Team Recognition’ for adoption of Best Practices by Devraj Chattaraj, Senior Consultant, TBExG, updated the group about the concept and framework on R&R for Best Practices. The group agreed that the winners should be decided through a regional level contest followed by a national level one. There was also consensus that the Best Practices should be for management processes in the following areas:

1.Leadership
2.Customers
3.Workforce
4.Strategy
5.Measurement and knowledge management
6.Safety

The Best Practices could be drawn from Tata companies as well as Non-Tata companies. The group also felt that it would be necessary to develop a portal for the above.

The BE Heads subsequently presented their plans and challenges in achieving business excellence.
Kalyan Banerjee, BE Head, Tata Metaliks, presented the BE Plan draft in the four areas of Business Initiative, Process Improvement, Capability Building and Culture. There were discussions around the role of BE Heads and their team.

This was followed by a presentation from R Somnath, BE Head, Tata Sponge, wherein he highlighted the key initiatives of the BE Plan in the BE Framework that will help the organisation achieve 650+ score in the TBEM assessment. He highlighted that all processes and system initiatives are driven by BE Champs.

Niranjan Rout, BE Head, Tata BlueScope, explained to the house the key focus areas and initiatives being undertaken by the organisation. They are divided into two broad areas, namely, operational excellence and excellence in capability building and culture.

Last but not the least, Indraneel Sarkar, BE Head, TRF, highlighted the critical issues that he and his team were facing in his company and sought advice from the participants on what should be the key focus area. The opinion of a majority of the participants was that the organisation should focus on quality management.
The meet concluded with Mr Sharan thanking the BE Heads for their presence and participation.
