Tata Power-DDL realises business benefits after benchmarking of distribution project KPIs from Tata Projects

Published on November 10, 2023

To ensure an uninterrupted and reliable power supply to its consumers, Tata Power Delhi Distribution (Tata Power-DDL) diligently focuses on timely project completion while maintaining strict adherence to safety, quality, and cost parameters. The distribution projects department is responsible for executing electrification and augmentation projects for Tata Power-DDL's operations. This includes activities such as obtaining right of way permissions, conducting cable laying work, and installing transformers, ring main units and poles.

The department’s targets were based only on historical performance data and lacked meaningful benchmarks for the KPIs it monitored. The company wanted to gain insights into industry best practices within the projects domain while also establishing benchmarks for the following KPIs:

  • Capital work in progress
  • Cost optimisation
  • First time right
  • Execution quality index
  • System average interruption duration index
  • Safety index

To support Tata Power-DDL in its improvement endeavours, TBExG facilitated a best practices sharing session with Tata Projects. On February 2, 2023, Kunal Sharma, DGM, Project Monitoring Group (SBU T&D), Tata Projects, shared an overview of transmission & distribution SBU of Tata Projects (transmission line, substations, distribution, railway electrification and tower manufacturing unit). He further gave a glimpse into key distribution projects (across J&K, Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh), challenges associated with underground cabling, project monitoring (using project health card and contract closure report) and safety monitoring and associated KPIs. Post this session, Tata Power-DDL would pick up and implement a clear roadmap for developing a distribution project management system and a digitised plan for all subgroups within the distribution projects team. This implementation has yielded the following benefits:

  • Reduced project average duration completion index from 5 months to 4 months.
  • Reduced physical completion to technical completion timelines from 42 days to 30 days.

Participant speak

TBExG has supported our improvement journey by connecting us with the right partners and best practices. We now have a clear roadmap for developing a distribution project management system and a digitised plan for the all subgroups of the distribution projects team.
