Tata group remembers the legacy of JRD Tata in JRDQV 2017

The Tata group celebrated J R D Tata’s 113th birth anniversary by hosting the JRDQV function at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), for recognising the companies that have driven business excellence within their ecosystems. In addition to the senior leadership team of Tata companies, the event on July 29, 2017 was graced with the presence of retired Tata leaders who were pioneers of the excellence movement within the group. These included revered Tata veterans like J K Setna, Dr. J J Irani, R Gopalakrishnan, M N Bhagwat and R K Krishna Kumar.

The evening started with the lighting of the divo by Group Chairman N Chandrasekaran. This was followed by the recognition of the winners of the Tata Young Expressions award by the Chairman.

S Padmanabhan, Group CHRO, then delivered his address on the Tata Business Excellence movement. Expressing his gratitude to the contributions of the pioneers of the business excellence movement who were present at the event, Mr. Padmanabhan said that their knowledge, experience and leadership in the past 22 years has ensured that the Tata group has scaled new peaks of excellence. He also threw light on the evolution and improvements in the TBEM model over the years, according to the requirements of various businesses.

The recognitions for the companies were next: eight Tata companies were recognised in three categories of recognitions.

The most awaited session of the day, the Keynote Address from Chairman Mr. Chandrasekaran, was next, during which he elaborated on the seven themes that the Tata group would need to focus on, in order to achieve higher levels of performance. These were Collaboration, Simplification, Talent & Leadership Development, Culture, Focus on Customer, Digital and Community. Group Chairman’s session was followed by an interesting Q&A session, during which attendees asked him questions on a varied range of topics, from innovation and customer to digital platforms and leveraging Tata group synergies.

The Symphony Orchestra of India, based at the NCPA, then performed compositions on the piano, flute, cello and violin as a musical tribute to J R D Tata.

The last session of the day was by renowned historian, biographer and author – Ramchandra Guha, who spoke about how the story of the Tata group and its leadership is intertwined with Nation Building. Taking various excerpts from the letters and writings of J R D Tata, Mr. Guha threw light on his personality and interactions with those around him. Including J R D Tata in the four great Indian leaders, Mr. Guha said that Patriotism, Courage and Transparency were three traits that he was known for.

The scintillating evening came to a close with a Vote of Thanks by Harish Bhat, Brand Custodian, Tata Sons.
