Tata Projects: Structured Approach for Industrial HSE Awards

Published on July 19, 2023

Define:

Until FY22, EHS leaders at Tata Projects sites were applying for the HSE award on an "as & when" basis and application filing was based on their perception. This approach resulted in poor selection of the award category; the low success rate also incurred financial implications due to the application fees. A structured approach was missing to showcase differentiation.

Measure:

The company reduced the award categories from 31 to 3, mapped 200+ projects, and bucketed them under three award programmes, which have their intrinsic value.

Analyse:

Tata Projects analysed the different infrastructure BUs in terms of Safety Risk Index, and type of customer and involved leadership engagement in the whole process, right from application filing and assessment. The entire process was run and controlled centrally.

Improve:

  • In FY23, the company took steps to address the challenges of pursuing Industrial HSE awards. It engaged the leadership team and implemented a highly organised and methodical approach to the process.
  • As a result of this approach, the company has achieved an impressive success rate of ~90% in winning the awards.
  • In FY23, Tata Projects was honoured with 35 awards, which include prestigious recognitions such as the International Safety Award by the British Safety Council, the RoSPA Award, NSCI Safety Award, and the CII Award for OHS Best Practices.
  • These awards include a gold and silver Award from NSCI, and all 12 Tata Projects sites were recipients of the International Safety Award by the British Safety Council.
  • These remarkable achievements have fostered a positive competitive spirit within the businesses of the company, driving the organisation to strive for excellence in HSE implementation.

Control:

Tata Projects continues to improve the process and engage operational leadership at an ambitious level. The company’s success in winning these awards has been a testimony to the effectiveness of the structured approach, and it is committed to continuing these efforts moving forward.
