Tata Projects: Leadership Team Enhances HSE Prioritisation by Leveraging Cross-Learning

Published on July 28, 2023

Define:

Tata Projects believes that the lack of cross-learning between different businesses, projects, departments, and teams hinders the development of a cohesive and collaborative work culture (reducing silos). Additionally, there was a need for a quick, visible and demonstrated leadership engagement to prioritise HSE concerns at all levels of the organisation to overcome a culture of ‘EHS for EHS and by EHS’

Measure:

In FY23, 53 reportable events and over 7900 near misses were reported across ~200 projects. With the alerts process, the learning and leadership engagement remained poor.

Analyse:

During audits, a poor memory of ops leaders on incidents and good practices in other projects was identified. Many best practices were being implemented in various projects which were not accounted for and poorly leveraged/communicated at the organisational level.

Improve/Implement:

  • Implemented a phased approach to promote HSE awareness and engagement
  • Phase 1: Initiated 10-minute virtual live communications with HSE leaders for immediate communication and action on HSE-related issues
  • Phase 2: Practices and weekly 10-minute virtual live sessions led by the leadership team and head of HSE to communicate containment/preventive actions, share best practices, and discuss process strengthening
  • 100% of business functional leaders participated and demonstrated their engagement in HSE insights
  • The approach enabled real-time identification, cross-learning, and timely resolution of potential HSE-related issues on ground
  • Sessions were broadcasted, and recordings were shared on the same day for convenient access
  • Recordings were archived in the intranet and internal social networking platforms (like Yammer) to ensure information was easily accessible to all employees

Control - Maintain the Solution:

  • The HSE communication process at Tata Projects can produce 50+ insights annually, including event learnings, good practices, and process strengthening, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement. These insights are also utilised for safety moments at different review meetings at all levels.
  • Further, site RCM cascades down these short videos to contractors and even showcases them with customers in the safety committee meeting.
  • The leadership team's involvement can result in effective communication and demonstrated commitment to HSE, reinforcing the importance of safety across the organisation (Tata Safety Belief).
