Tata Consultancy Services Limited (TCS): Transforming workplaces through care and empathy

Published on July 04, 2023

Small gestures of kindness – a listening ear, a smile, a kind word – can turn a life around. But is it possible to create a corporate culture based on empathy?

At TCS, there is a metric called 'lives saved’. These represent the high-risk cases identified, reported and supported through timely counselling, HR, manager & peer support.

In FY22-23, TCS saved 149 lives through a culture of empathy, open conversations on mental health and a robust well-being support network which fosters psychological safety, sensitised leadership and a culture of care, empathy and watching out for each other.

The TCS Cares initiative centred around the belief that each of us can heal and impact lives around us, is designed and structured around a ‘5 pillar framework’ consisting of Awareness, Understanding, Acceptance, Support and Community.

Sensitised HR, leadership, peer support networks, weekly Notes of Care, resilience surveys & interventions, webinars & conversations around mental health, curated care programs for senior leadership, and focused support for return to office transition have all contributed to a workplace where associates can openly voice their concerns and reach out to each other.

It was a year of accomplishments as well, with Tata Consultancy Services being awarded the Platinum Certification for Healthy Workplaces from Arogya World, where the key focus was on how organisations are innovatively supporting employee well-being in the hybrid work environment.

In FY22-23, every initiative and offering under the mental well-being initiative has contributed to a global associate engagement of 132K, which has significantly contributed to the psychological safety as well as holistic well-being of associates.

The spirit and ethos of our work have been aptly captured in this testimonial by an associate, “TCS Cares has touched me. I feel connected and deeply committed to this initiative on embracing life and mental health. Heartfelt gratitude for the innumerable initiatives and conversations around mental well-being brought for all of us during these changing times.
